CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Jeremy and Alistair arrived about ten minutes later. Fully dressed, they sat on the floor in the miniscule cabin, legs spread out on the floor. With six of us crowded in the small space, we waited for somebody to break the silence. I parked myself on Blake’s bunk beside Sam, and he slung his arm around my shoulder.

“So, what’s the urgency? Can somebody tell me why we were woken up in the wee hours in the morning to have this meeting?” Jeremy asked with a yawn.

“Con’s even more of a danger than we originally thought,” Blake muttered.

Alistair blinked “Why? What’s going on?”

“I had a dream,” I whispered. “Con was in it.”

“A nightmare. That’s why you woke us up? For a freaking nightmare?” Jeremy scoffed. “Fuck it. I’m going back to bed.”

I shook my head. They weren’t taking this seriously because they didn’t know. Desperate, I stood and grabbed Jeremy’s arm. He looked down at my hand in frustration. I hissed, “What if I told you he purposely joined me in my dream because of my abilities?”

“Go on...” Jeremy replied.

“Have you heard of dream walkers?” Blake said, zeroing in on my hand still gripping Jeremy’s arm.

“A long time ago. They don’t exist, though.” Jeremy shook off my hand, facing the room. “What does this have to do with anything?”

Alistair chose this moment to speak. “What are dream walkers?”

Apparently, vampires didn’t know what they were either. It didn’t surprise me with the hatred between the two races. The secrets kept behind closed doors must be to keep the powers hidden. Why let your enemy know what you could actually do? Ashton demonstrated that vampires possessed amazing powers. He’d moved Blake around like a puppet on a string during their fight. Ashton’s abilities made me nervous what the brothers could do together. The same vampire who happened to be the very first vampire in existence sired them. My father. What did that say about me? Did I inherit some crazy shit?

“Basically, Lily and I can enter dreams. Lily’s ability is a tad different from mine. She’s yet to master it, but because she’s able to dream of the future, I’m not sure what will develop along with it. I’d hate Lily to join somebody in sleep and accidentally show his or her future. That’d be really bad, especially if it involved that person’s death,” Blake said, giving me a look that I didn’t understand. “So, when she said she’d dreamed about Con, it meant that he was actually there with her. It might have been the metaphysical level, but he knew what he was doing.”

With a frown, Alistair inquired, “But how can he join her in dreamland? It doesn’t make any sense. Even if he can control minds with other vampires, it still doesn’t mean he’d have any control to do that. Other vampires who can read thoughts can’t get into dreams.”

Paige gasped as it sunk in. “Oh. My. God. He bit her. Con bit her while held captive. Holy shit! I thought if he bit her, then he would try to force a match on her - or worse.
